Biomedical Engineering and Biotechnology

Thomas J. Webster’s (H index: 126; Google Scholar) degrees are in chemical engineering from the University of Pittsburgh (B.S., 1995; USA) and in biomedical engineering from RPI (Ph.D., 2000; USA). He has served as a professor at Purdue (2000-2005), Brown (2005-2012), and Northeastern (2012-2021; serving as Chemical Engineering Department Chair from 2012 - 2019) Universities and has formed over a dozen companies who have numerous FDA approved medical products currently improving human health. He is currently helping those companies and serves as a professor at Hebei University of Technology, Saveetha University, Vellore Institute of Technology, UFPI, and others. Ajeet Kaushik, Fellow-ICS, is working as an assistant professor of Chemistry at the Department of Environmental Engineering of Florida Polytechnic University – USA. He is exploring nano-enabled technologies for health and environmental monitoring, involving efficient sensing and nanomedicine. He is an accomplished scholar (supported by over 300 publications, editorial roles, 12 edited books, 3 patents, and international collaborations) and the recipient of several international awards in support of his credentials. His research interests include green chemistry, electrochemistry, chemical sensors, biosensors, nanomedicine, targeted drug delivery, point-of-care sensing, and personalized health wellness. To achieve goals, Dr. Kaushik is focused on cutting-edge research and seeking collaborations.

Antonio Pedotti is Emeritus Professor of Biomedical Technologies at the Politecnico di Milano where he has been Chair of the Bioengineering Department, member of the Academic Senate and Director of the Biomedical Technologies Laboratory. He has been Founder and Director of the Bioengineering Center of Milan established by the Politecnico and the Don Gnocchi Fnd. He has conducted research on computational modelling and information technologies in many areas of medicine to understand how brain is controlling complex functions like movements, cardiovascular and respiratory systems and how to interact with computer to help patients. He has authored over 400 publications (Scholar H-Index 72)including scientific papers, books and patents that address critical medical needs especially for movement analysis, rehabilitation, cardiovascular monitoring, pulmonary deseases and hadrontherapy in oncology. He has been professor at the University of California,Berkeley, national representative in the COMAC-BME of the European Union, member of the Superior Health Council of Italy, editorial board member of several scientific journals, Chairman of the European Society of Engineering and Medicine, of the International Society of Electrophysiology and Kinesiology, President of the Italian Association of the Medical and Biological Engineering. In 2000 he contributed to establish the CNAO, the Italian Cancer Centre specialized in translational research and Hadrontherapy where he serves in the Board of Governors since the beginning. Pedotti is fellow of the Istituto Lombardo Accademia di Scienze e Lettere, of the International Academy of Medical and Biological Engineering and of the AAIA (Asia-Pacific Artificial Intelligence Association).

Camillo Porcaro is a professor of bioengineering at the Department of Neuroscience at the University of Padova. He is a computational neuroscientist with a core interest in developing analytical methods for extracting information from non-invasive measures of brain activity. His research focuses on identifying functional brain sources from data obtained through neuroimaging techniques. In 2008, he defended his doctoral thesis in "Functional Neuroimaging: from Cells to Systems" with honours at the Institute of Advanced Biomedical Technologies (ITAB), University of Chieti, Italy. The same year, he became a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Birmingham—School of Psychology, using simultaneous EEG/fMRI. In 2011, he joined the Institute of Neuroscience, Newcastle University, after gaining a highly competitive independent research position. From October 2011 to September 2021, he was an Independent Researcher at the Institute of Cognitive Sciences and Technologies (ISTC) - National Research Council (CNR), Rome, Italy. Furthermore, in 2014 and 2015, he was invited as Visiting Professor at the Neural Control of Movement Lab, Department of Health Sciences and Technology ETH, Zurich, Switzerland and from 2015 to 2022 as an Adjunct Professor at the Department of Information Engineering – Polytechnic University of Marche, Ancona (Professor of Bio-imaging and Brain Research at the Department of Biomedical Engineering). In addition, from 2016 to 2020, he was Visiting Professor at the Department of Human Kinesiology, Movement Control & Neuroplasticity Research Group, KU Leuven, Belgium and from 2018 to 2021, he was Head of the Research hdEEG Lab at S. Anna Institute and Research in Advanced Neurorehabilitation (RAN), Crotone, Italy. Finally, since October 2021, he has been appointed Associate Professor at Padua University - Department of Neuroscience. He has co-authored more than 100 publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

He got a PhD from Department of Organic and Polymeric Materials in Tokyo Institute of Technology in 1997 by a study on water and polymer diffusion in aqueous gels using NMR techniques. He is a specialist for measurements of the diffusion coefficients D in polymer solution, especially the D of polymer probe in gels by super high magnetic field gradient. His research interests are 1) Network structure and molecular mobility in food gels studied by NMR methods, 2) Physicochemical property in a nano-size emulsion system, 3) Phase separation in mixed polysaccharide solutions studies by particle tracking technique using fluorescent nanoparticles and 4) Development of nursery care foods. His working careers are 1997-2003 Assistant professor, 2003- 2016 Associate professor, 2016-present at Tokyo University of Marine Science & Technology. He is an associate editor of Food Hydrocolloids.

Marek Konop is an Associate Professor in the Department of Experimental Physiology and Pathophysiology at the Medical University of Warsaw. He works in the field of experimental dermatology and regenerative medicine, especially in the role of biomaterials like keratin and silk in diabetic wound models, collaborating with many international institutions. He is the author or co-author of approximately 40 papers mainly in the fields of wound healing and experimental cardiology. His Ph.D. and further research has focused on skin wound healing and biomaterials.

Dr Sikiru O. ISMAIL is a Chartered Engineer and a Senior Lecturer in Manufacturing Engineering and Materials, Department of Engineering, School of Physics, Engineering and Computer Science, University of Hertfordshire, England, UK. He is an active member of Centre for Engineering Research as well as Outreach and Networking Coordinator of Centre for Climate Change Research. He completed his Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in the School of Mechanical and Design Engineering, University of Portsmouth, England, UK, after obtaining his PhD degree in the same University, as a sponsored researcher with prestigious awards. Prior to his PhD degree, he obtained ND, BEng (Hons) and MSc with First Class Honours/Distinction Grades as Overall/Best Student in all his degree programmes, among other outstanding prizes. Moreover, Dr Ismail has several years of professional (industrial, research and academic/lecturing) experience, having worked in many sectors. His research specialisation focuses on Biomaterials (Biocomposite scaffolds) and Advanced/Additive Manufacturing: Bioprinting/biofabrication, 3D and 4D printing for Biomedical/Tissue Engineering, among others, using Experimental and Numerical Simulation/Finite Element/Analytical Modelling Techniques. He has obtained PGCE, hence successfully supervised many undergraduate and postgraduate projects. He has won both prestigious internal and external research grants or funding and scholarships. In addition, he has presented and published over 130 reputable high impact articles. Dr Ismail is a Reviewer and Editorial Board Member of many reputable local and international journals and conferences. He is currently a Visiting Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Kalasalingam Academy of Research and Education, Tamil Nadu. In addition, he was Guest Editor of Special Issues of a few good Journals. He is a qualified Advance Higher Education Internal and External (local and international) Examiner. Furthermore, Dr Ismail is a Member, Chartered Engineer and Fellow of some local and international professional bodies: MASME and MASC (USA), MIMechE, CEng MIET, FHEA and FRSA (UK). Summarily, Dr Ismail is an active lecturer and researcher; he is very passionate about supporting students to achieve excellence and solving Biomedical Engineering problems for industries/health sector through cutting-edge, state-of-the-art and globally relevant research.

Yanbo Liu, a professor in Nonwovens Department of Wuhan Textile University, Hubei Province, P. R. China, she gained her PhD degree in Materials Science and Engineering, the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN, USA, 2004. Her research directions are focused on micro-nano fiber preparation and their applications, mainly including the principles of electrospinning technology, equipment development, and nanofiber product development for applications in filtration, flexible fabric sensors, battery separators, waterproof and breathable membranes, wound dressing, medical scaffolds, etc. She also performs researches on bacterial cellulosic nanofiber-based aerogels for applications in insulation, adsorption and separation. She has published more than 120 papers and edited one book, and completed two NSFC research projects, two provincial projects and more than 20 research projects from the relevant companies as PI, and she was authorized to grant more than 20 patents. The highest IF of her published paper is 40.4 (CSR), and she was entitled with Young Scientist Award by IAAM in 2023.

Lijia Pan is currently a full Professor of college of electronic science and engineering, Nanjing University. Hereceived Bachelor from South China University of technology, then obtained Ph.D. from the University of science and technology of China. He worked as postdoc in department of physics, Nanjing University between 2004~2008. He has been a visiting scholar to Stanford University from 2011 to 2012 and May-August 2017. In 2018, he was funded by the National Science Fund for distinguished young Scientists, which is similar to the NSF career award of US (2019-2023). In 2017, he won Second Prize of National Natural Science Award (Ranked 2 in a team with 5 members). The work of his team on induction heating recovery device of crude oil spill wonGold Prize with Congratulations of the Jury in the International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva 2021. Heis dedicated to the research of polymer electronic materials and devices, electronic skin devices, and intelligent perception. He has more than 200 articles published in peer reviewed journals including Nature Sustainability, Nature Common., PNAS, Adv. Mater., Nano lett., ACS Nano, Energy & Environment. Sci., Acc. Chem. Res., and IEEE Electron Dev. Lett, which were cited more than 19000 times.

Dr. Fei Xu received his Ph.D. in Optoelectronics in 2008 from the Optoelectronics Research Centre, University of Southampton, UK. He is currently a professor at the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Nanjing University, China. Franz-Josef Meyer-Almes is currently Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Applied Sciences Darmstadt in Germany. He earned his Diploma in Chemistry at the Georg-August-University of Göttingen (Germany) in 1991 and his PhD in Biophysical Chemistry from the same University, working with Prof. Manfred Eigen at the Max-Planck-Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen. After completing his PhD, Dr. Meyer-Almes worked as scientist with the biotech start-up Evotec for 7 years. Then he accepted a position as laboratory head in the lead finding unit at Bayer Healthcare AG, where he worked for 3 years. The main focus of his research is in thermodynamics and kinetics of protein-ligand and protein-protein interaction, reaction kinetics and mechanism, biological assay development, drug design, medium throughput compound screening, and fluorescence spectroscopy.

Ahmed Hegazi is currently a Professor of Microbiology and Immunology in the National Research Center, Egypt. Prof. Hegazi received his master’s degree in 1979, and his PhD in 1981. Farnaz Ghorbani, PhD in Biomaterials, is a Research Fellow at Bristol Medical School, University of Bristol (UK), specializing in biomaterials and translational tissue engineering. She has received several prestigious awards, e.g., Alexander von Humboldt and Marie Curie Career FitPlus fellowships, and has led multiple multidisciplinary research projects as a Principal Investigator at Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg (Germany), University College London (UK), and Fudan University (China). She co-founded a company specializing in biomaterials and 3D printing (Tehran, Iran), underscoring her commitment to translating research into real-world applications. Dr. Ghorbani also was lecturer in Biomedical Engineering department of PaymNour University. She is currently Associate Editor of Frontiers in Biomaterials science Journal, specialty Bioinspired and Complex Materials. Also she is collaborating with IOP, MDPI, and FrontiersIn publishers as guest associate editor. Her contributions to academic publishing include editing three books and authoring seven book chapters, further demonstrating her expertise and leadership in the field. She holds four patents and is an active member of professional societies in biomaterials and tissue engineering across Europe. Beyond her research contributions, Dr. Ghorbani is committed to knowledge dissemination and academic engagement. She has organized eight scientific workshops and served as a co-organizer for two major conferences. Additionally, she has delivered multiple talks, including invited keynote and guest lectures at internationally recognized events. Her expertise lies in the design and development of bioinspired structures and materials, drawing inspiration from nature to engineer advanced biomaterials for regenerative medicine. Her research also encompasses protein-mediated surface functionalization, aiming to enhance cell-material interactions and direct tissue regeneration. With a strong focus on translational strategies for osteochondral defect repair, she integrates surface modification techniques, bio-inspired scaffolds, and biomaterials-driven approaches to bridge the gap between fundamental research and clinical applications.
